Cold Weather Range Reduction and Driver Communication
The Issue
Cold weather range reduction is one of the most significant and least well-communicated aspects of electric vehicle ownership. Across the cars tested, the information available to the driver about the extent of range reduction in cold conditions, and the specific causes of that reduction, was limited or absent. Drivers setting off in winter with a full charge and a range expectation formed during summer driving frequently encounter a reality that falls considerably short, with no explanation from the car of why the range is lower or which factors are contributing.
Why It Matters
Cold weather range reduction is the single most common source of surprise and dissatisfaction among new EV owners in the UK market. It is not a defect that can be engineered away entirely. It is a physical characteristic of lithium-ion battery chemistry that every manufacturer works with, and that every EV buyer needs to understand and plan around. The difference between a buyer who understands this and one who does not is the difference between an owner who adapts their behaviour and remains satisfied with the car, and one who feels misled and tells everyone they know not to buy one. The car itself is the most effective place to deliver that understanding, because it is present at every moment the relevant conditions occur.
