Charge Port Illumination and Status Indication

The Issue

Across the majority of electric vehicles tested, the charge port area was unlit. The socket was typically black or dark-coloured, set into a dark recess in the bodywork, and often positioned where ambient light from a street or car park did not reach it clearly. In low light, locating the socket precisely enough to connect the cable required using a phone torch, crouching for a better angle, or a degree of feel-and-attempt that occasionally failed on the first try. Once the cable was connected, the status of that connection was not always indicated at the port itself, requiring the driver to check the infotainment screen or open the companion app to confirm charging had begun.

Why It Matters

Connecting a charging cable in the dark is routine for any EV owner who charges at home in the evening or at a public charger after dark. In the UK, which has short daylight hours from October through March and a large proportion of car use in darkness during those months, a charge port that cannot be seen clearly is a port that takes longer to use and creates uncertainty about whether the connection has been made correctly. It is an accessibility issue as well as a usability one: for drivers with reduced mobility or vision, an unlit socket in a dark recess is a meaningful barrier. Status indication at the port itself matters equally. A driver who connects the cable and walks away needs to know, without returning to the car or checking a phone, that the cable is locked and charging has started, in the same way a petrol driver can hear and feel when a fuel nozzle is properly seated.
